Lower German Limes
The late antique Fort Divitia (Deutz) was part of a chain of Roman fortified military bases built along the Rhine. Over a stretch of more than 400 kilometers, the river separated the province of Lower Germany from the territories not occupied by the Romans. In 2021, the Lower German Limes – as part of the transnational monument “Frontiers of the Roman Empire” – was officially inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
